UN warns Iran conflict may disrupt fertilizer supply and food security

A senior economist from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has raised concerns about a possible global food crisis. The warning comes as ongoing conflict in Iran continues to affect the global fertilizer supply.

Fertilizers are essential for crop production. They help improve soil quality and increase crop yields. When fertilizer supply is disrupted, farmers may struggle to grow enough food. This can lead to lower production and higher food prices.

According to the expert, the current situation is creating pressure on fertilizer availability worldwide. Many countries depend on steady fertilizer supplies to maintain agricultural productivity. Any disruption can have a direct impact on farming operations.

The conflict is limiting production and distribution channels. This is reducing the amount of fertilizer reaching global markets. As a result, farmers may use less fertilizer or delay its use, which can reduce crop output.

Lower crop production can create shortages in food supply. Over time, this may lead to higher prices and limited access to essential food items. Developing countries may face greater challenges due to limited resources and dependence on imports.

The expert highlighted that the impact may not be immediate but could develop within a year. This delay is because agricultural cycles take time, and the effects of reduced fertilizer use appear gradually.

Governments and global organizations are closely monitoring the situation. They are exploring ways to stabilize fertilizer supply and support farmers during this period.

The warning emphasizes the need for careful planning and global cooperation. Ensuring stable fertilizer availability is important for maintaining food security and preventing future crises.
