Ontario Cauliflower Growing is Concentrated in Key Areas

There are only 1,225 acres dedicated to growing cauliflower in Ontario, but they produce 14,545,000 lbs of the vegetable. Growers across key vegetable-producing regions are preparing for increased shipments of locally grown cauliflower to grocery stores, restaurants, wholesalers and farmers markets.

Ontario is one of Canada’s leading vegetable-producing provinces, supported by fertile soils, established processing and distribution networks, and a strong fresh-market sector.  Cauliflower is an important specialty vegetable crop, with production concentrated in areas that have the climate, irrigation infrastructure and soil conditions needed for consistent quality.

As with other vegetables grown in Ontario, cauliflower production is concentrated is concentrated in the Holland Marsh. The region’s fertile muck soils and long history of vegetable production make it well suited for crops such as cauliflower.  Other cauliflower growing regions include Niagara and Norfolk County.

The 2026 growing season has provided some challenges for cauliflower producers, across its growing regions above-normal temperatures with variable precipitation patterns has meant that there has had to be a focus on moisture management throughout the season.

Heat also creates challenges because the crop performs best under cooler conditions. Extended periods of high temperatures may affect head development, quality and harvest timing. Luckily, no major province-wide cauliflower production losses have been reported.

Growing high-quality cauliflower requires significant management and attention. Unlike some crops that can be harvested mechanically, cauliflower is often harvested by hand because growers must evaluate each plant for size, colour, firmness and market readiness.

Hats off to the cauliflowers in Ontario this growing season.
