How Sunflower Growers Can Manage Sclerotinia Disease

Sunflower growers across the Prairies continue to face one of the crop's most stubborn diseases: sclerotinia. While there is no silver bullet for controlling the disease, a Manitoba Crop Alliance agronomy specialist says producers can reduce risk through a combination of management practices.

According to Cott, managing sclerotinia in sunflowers is not straightforward because the disease can infect plants through multiple pathways and survive in soil for many years.

It is one of the most difficult questions to answer because there are many things to consider Cott explained. While management tools are available, success depends on understanding how the disease develops and applying multiple strategies rather than relying on a single solution.

Understanding How Sclerotinia Infects Sunflowers

One of the most damaging forms of the disease is sclerotinia head rot. Infection begins when fungal spores land on dead sunflower florets and pollen. These materials provide a base from which the fungus can grow into the sunflower head.

Once established, the disease advances into the receptacle, eventually causing the head to decay.

The same sclerotinia species is also responsible for basal stalk rot, often called sclerotinia wilt, and mid-stalk rot.

For basal stalk rot, infection occurs when fungal growth emerges from sclerotia, hardened survival structures that remain in the soil. Mid-stalk rot can also occur through airborne spores and may develop earlier in the growing season or around the same time as head rot.

Because the disease cycle can begin well before flowering, Cott emphasizes that effective management starts long before growers see blooms in the field.

Crop Rotation Helps, But Is Not Enough

Crop rotation has long been a cornerstone of sunflower disease management, but Cott cautions that it should not be viewed as a complete solution.

Growers are encouraged to leave at least three years between sunflower crops and other susceptible oilseed crops that can host sclerotinia. However, the disease's survival structures can remain viable in the soil for extended periods, making complete elimination difficult.

As a result, rotation should be considered just one part of a broader management strategy.

Layering Practices to Reduce Risk

Cott recommends integrating several agronomic practices to reduce the likelihood and severity of infections.

One important consideration is nitrogen management.

Applying excessive nitrogen can encourage lush vegetative growth and create a dense canopy. These conditions can trap moisture and increase humidity within the crop, creating an environment favourable for sclerotia development and disease progression.

Weed control is another critical component.

Many broadleaf weeds and volunteer crops can serve as hosts for sclerotinia. When these plants become infected, they can contribute additional sclerotia to the soil, increasing disease pressure in future growing seasons.

Maintaining clean fields can therefore help reduce opportunities for the fungus to reproduce and spread.

Integrated Management Key to Long-Term Success

For sunflower producers, the message is clear: managing sclerotinia requires a long-term approach that combines crop rotation, fertility management, strong weed control practices, and ongoing monitoring.

While no single practice can eliminate the disease, layering multiple management strategies can reduce infection risk and help protect yield potential.

As sunflower acreage remains an important part of Prairie crop rotations, growers who focus on integrated disease management may be better positioned to limit the impacts of one of the crop's most persistent threats.
