New automation system helps farmers bale faster with less effort
John Deere has introduced a new Hands-Free Baling solution designed to make baling operations easier, more consistent, and more productive for farmers and ranchers.
The system combines several existing precision agriculture technologies into one integrated package. These technologies include AutoTrac guidance, AutoTrac Turn Automation, weave automation, gate automation, and speed automation. Together, they help automate many of the steps involved in producing high-quality round bales.
“The hands-free baling technology combines John Deere’s legacy guidance feature, AutoTrac, with our innovative Weave Automation round baler feature, creating a solution that was built shoulder-to-shoulder with our customers. It makes a repetitive baling job easier and more efficient,” said Kaylene Ballesteros, marketing manager for hay and forage equipment at John Deere.
She added, “By automating the baling process, we’re helping operators simplify their job and reduce the opportunity for error.”
Designed for cornstalk and straw baling, the solution allows tractors and balers to work together with minimal operator input. The system can automatically follow windrows, create more uniform bales, control tractor speed, automate bale wrapping and ejection, and perform repeatable turns at field ends.
By reducing the amount of manual work required, operators can focus on other important activities while maintaining balance of quality and efficiency. Technology is especially useful during busy harvest periods when time and labor are limited.
According to internal testing, the automated system can improve productivity by up to 8.4% when measured in bales per hour. It can also improve fuel efficiency by up to 4.4% and reduce operator activity by as much as 76%.
The new technology also helps farmers gain more value from their precision agriculture investments. By using guidance lines created during earlier field operations, the system supports a connected workflow from crop production through harvest.
In addition, the technology works with digital farm management systems that provide improved documentation, operational visibility, and data insights. This helps producers make informed decisions and better manage their operations.
Available on select John Deere 1 Series Round Balers paired with compatible 6R, 7R, and 8R tractors, Hands-Free Baling represents another step forward in agricultural automation. The innovation supports farmers by increasing efficiency, reducing workload, and helping them accomplish more during critical harvest windows.
