New docuseries highlights outdoor education and land stewardship skills
Kubota North America is supporting a new four-part docuseries that highlights the growing interest in farm-based learning and outdoor education. The series follows students, families, and educators who are using hands-on experiences to teach important life skills and encourage a stronger connection with nature.
The program focuses on how learning can take place outside a traditional classroom. Through activities such as caring for animals, growing food, maintaining gardens, and observing the environment, students develop practical knowledge while learning responsibility and problem-solving skills. These experiences help young people understand the value of caring for the land and working together in their communities.
“Learning here doesn’t look like what we all grew up with,” said Taylor Moran, host of “Farm School’d” and founder of outdoor and parenting platform Leaf & Learn and The Natural State School in Arkansas. “There are no tests, no desks, no bells — but it’s learning that is felt and lived, with real hands-on life skills that address the needs of the whole child, where equity stays front and center so every child in every neighborhood can access a new way to learn.”
The series also showcases how farm schools are creating opportunities for children to learn through movement, exploration, and real-world experiences. Supporters of this educational approach believe it helps students connect academic concepts with daily life while building confidence and independence. Outdoor learning environments encourage curiosity, creativity, and a better understanding of natural systems.
“People are returning to the land everywhere, and children are leading the way in farm and forest schools. As a former classroom teacher and university professor, I founded Wauhatchie Forest School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 2015, and then in 2021, Nature Kin Farm & Forest School also in Chattanooga,” said Dr. Jean Lomino, founder of the Forest School Teacher Institute
He added, "Not only to provide this wonderful experience for local children, but to create a model so that all children can have the same experience of learning, thriving, and growing in nature. And the dream, of course, is that it will extend into the public schools.”
Educators featured in the series explain that farm and forest schools are becoming increasingly popular because they provide meaningful learning experiences that engage children in new ways. These programs often focus on observation, hands-on projects, and student-led discovery, helping learners develop essential skills while staying connected to the natural world.
