New preplant herbicide offers strong resistance control for major Prairie crops

Gowan Canada has announced the registration of Garrison Liquid EC Herbicide by Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency. Gowan says this new preplant herbicide gives Prairie farmers an effective solution for managing herbicide-resistant weeds in important crops.

Garrison Liquid EC is registered for use in canola, mustard, dry peas, and for fall application in flax and lentils -- crops that are widely grown across the Prairie region and often face serious yield losses due to early season weed competition.

The product combines two active ingredients, triallate and trifluralin. These belong to different herbicide groups and work in two different ways to control weeds. Using two modes of action helps slow down the development of herbicide resistance. This makes Garrison Liquid EC an important tool for long-term weed management planning.

Garrison Liquid EC is applied and mixed into the soil before planting. This allows it to stop weeds before they emerge. It controls difficult weeds such as wild oats, Persian darnel, and other annual grass and broadleaf weeds that are known to reduce crop growth and final yield.

“Herbicide-resistant weeds remain a major challenge for Canadian growers,” said Dale Ziprick, Product Manager at Gowan Canada. “Garrison Liquid EC offers farmers another tool to protect yields, manage resistance, and sustain long-term crop productivity.”

By controlling weeds early, crops can use more nutrients, water, and sunlight. This supports stronger early growth and helps farmers achieve better yield potential. The product also fits well into integrated weed management programs that focus on preventing resistance and protecting soil health.

Garrison Liquid EC can be applied in both fall and spring. It also allows tank mixing with other compatible products when used according to label directions. Its long-lasting soil activity gives farmers flexible planning options and reliable weed control through the early stages of crop development.

According to Gowan Canada, herbicide-resistant weeds remain a serious concern for farmers. This new product offers another effective solution to protect yields and support sustainable farming practices across the Prairie region.

Garrison Liquid EC will be available for purchase for the spring 2026 growing season. Farmers are encouraged to review the product label for full application instructions, rates, and resistance management guidelines before use.
