World Dairy Expo recognizes Wisconsin dairyman for dedication and leadership

Matt Sloan of Marshall, Wisconsin, has been honored with the 34th Klussendorf-MacKenzie Award during World Dairy Expo® 2025. Presented in memory of Duncan MacKenzie, the 1961 Klussendorf winner, the award recognizes individuals who embody the values of dedication, humility, and craftsmanship in the dairy industry.

Sloan’s dairy journey began remarkably early. At just 14, before he could drive, he started clipping cattle for Nabholz Farms. Under the guidance of respected mentors such as Joel Kietzman, Tom Cull, Mark Rueth, Jason Danhof, Pat Conroy, and Mike and Joel Phoenix, Sloan quickly developed the skills that would make him one of North America’s most trusted cattle fitters.

Over the years, his expertise has taken him across 15 countries spanning Europe, South America, Australia, and North America, preparing elite cattle for top competitions. Among his many experiences, Sloan holds a special admiration for RF Goldwyn Hailey and Musqie Iatola Martha — cows that inspired his professional excellence.

In 2010, with encouragement from his friend Dave Schmocker, Sloan launched his hoof-trimming business, Carpe Diem, which means “Seize the Day.” Guided by this motto, he continues to approach each task with purpose and integrity.

Together with his wife Molly, he began boarding and developing elite show heifers in 2020. Many of their animals have achieved national recognition and All-American nominations. Recently, Sloan has also built a strong reputation as a dairy judge, serving in prestigious roles at major shows, including World Dairy Expo.

Humble, hardworking, and quietly inspiring, Matt Sloan’s leadership continues to set a standard of excellence for the dairy community, making him a deserving recipient of the 2025 Klussendorf-MacKenzie Award.
