Monette Farms Bid Deadline Marks Next Phase of Creditor Protection Process

Court-supervised review of offers is underway as one of Canada's largest farm restructuring cases enters a critical stage.

The court-supervised restructuring of Monette Farms has reached another major milestone.

The deadline for submitting offers on the company's land and assets passed on October 15, marking the end of the bidding window established under the court-approved Sale and Investment Solicitation Process (SISP). The process is part of the farm group's ongoing creditor protection proceedings under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA).

Now that offers have been received, the focus shifts to evaluating bids and determining which transactions could move forward for court approval.

One of North America's Largest Farm Restructurings

The Monette group of companies entered creditor protection in April after financial challenges left it owing more than $900 million to secured creditors. Court records show the operation owned approximately 274,000 acres of farmland and leased an additional 218,000 acres across Western Canada and several U.S. states.

The operation farmed land in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia, Montana, Colorado, and Arizona, making it one of the largest privately operated farming businesses in North America.

The court-approved restructuring process was designed to allow the company to pursue multiple options, including:

  • Sales of farmland and assets
  • Sales of portions of the business
  • New investment
  • Refinancing arrangements
  • Combinations of the above approaches

Bid Review Now Underway

According to reports, Monette Farms, court-appointed monitor FTI Consulting, and members of the lending syndicate are now reviewing offers submitted before the October 15 deadline.

At this stage, no public details have been released regarding:

  • The number of bids received
  • The value of submitted offers
  • Whether bids involve entire land packages or individual properties
  • Potential successful purchasers

Those details are expected to emerge through future court filings and monitor reports.

Upcoming Milestones to Watch

With the bidding period complete, several important dates remain in the restructuring timeline.

November 2026 Court Activity

Any proposed sale of land or other significant assets must receive approval from the Alberta Court of King's Bench before transactions can be completed.

Reports indicate additional information regarding successful bids and recommended transactions is likely to appear in reports filed by the monitor before the next court proceedings.

November 13, 2026

The current stay of proceedings protecting Monette Farms from creditor enforcement actions is scheduled to expire on November 13. The company or monitor may seek an extension if additional time is required to complete transactions.

November 30, 2026

November 30 remains the scheduled conclusion date for the court-approved Sale and Investment Solicitation Process. By that point, the restructuring process is expected to have identified successful bidders, refinancing arrangements, investors, or a combination of solutions.

Agricultural observers across the Prairies continue to closely watch the outcome of the Monette process due to the sheer scale of the land involved.

The restructuring includes large farmland holdings in Saskatchewan and Manitoba that have been publicly marketed for sale since June. The eventual transfer of ownership for such a significant acreage base could provide new insight into investor demand, farmland values, and the appetite for large-scale agricultural assets across Western Canada.

To date, the only property that has publicly advanced toward completion through the court process is the Arizona-based Aguila Farm, which previously received court approval for sale, subject to various closing requirements.

For now, producers, lenders, landowners, and investors are awaiting the next round of court filings that may reveal who is bidding on one of the largest farmland portfolios ever assembled in Canadian agriculture and how much buyers are willing to pay for it.
