Enironment Canada is boosting weather forecasts with an AI Hybrid system that it says will boost forecast accuracy and earlier severe weather alerts

The Canadian Government is introducing a new hybrid weather forecasting model that combines artificial intelligence with traditional methods to improve accuracy and public safety. This new system is designed to help people – including farmers – prepare earlier for extreme weather events such as storms, heat waves, and floods.

The hybrid model uses artificial intelligence to analyze large amounts of data and predict future weather patterns. At the same time, it includes traditional physics-based forecasting, which considers local factors like temperature, wind, and precipitation. By combining both approaches, the system delivers more reliable and detailed forecasts.

One major benefit of this model is improved performance across all forecast timeframes. Short-term, medium-term, and long-range predictions will become more accurate. For example, a six-day forecast using this new system will be as accurate as a five-day forecast from older models. This marks a significant advancement, as such improvements previously took years to achieve.

Another important advantage is earlier detection of major weather systems. The model can provide warnings about severe events 8 to 24 hours sooner than before. This extra time allows communities, farmers, and emergency services to prepare and respond more effectively.

The system also increases confidence in forecasting by better predicting when weather conditions will begin and how storms will move. This helps improve planning in sectors like agriculture and transportation, where weather plays a critical role.

“Today’s announcement highlights the importance of investing in cutting‑edge innovation, positioning Canada as a global leader in weather prediction and climate projection. Artificial intelligence supports earlier detection of weather-related events, as well as enhance the reliability and accuracy of forecasts. With continued AI advancements, we are strengthening Canada’s ability to keep our communities and loved ones safe from extreme weather,” said Julie Dabrusin, Minister of the Environment, Climate Change and Nature.

Extensive testing has been conducted over the past year, with scientists comparing the hybrid model to traditional systems. The new model has also been used to study past storms, showing its ability to detect events earlier and more accurately.

While artificial intelligence plays a key role, meteorologists remain essential. Their expertise helps interpret data and communicate clear and accurate information to the public.

“Artificial intelligence is helping Canada do what matters most: give people better information, earlier, when it counts,” said Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.

“By combining AI with the expertise of Canadian meteorologists, this new hybrid forecasting model will help Canadians prepare sooner for severe weather and strengthen our leadership in trusted, practical AI,” said Solomon.

This innovation highlights Canada’s commitment to using advanced technology to improve safety and adapt to changing climate conditions.

The farming community could use more accurate forecasting, especially during planting season.
