Fourteen state agriculture leaders recognized for long-term contributions to farming and agricultural policy
The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) introduced a new annual Years of Service Ceremony during its 2026 annual meeting to recognize agriculture leaders who have dedicated many years to serving farmers, ranchers and rural communities across the United States.
The inaugural awards program honored 14 commissioners, secretaries and directors of agriculture from states and territories across the country. Recipients were recognized for reaching service milestones of more than 10, 15, and 20 years in their leadership roles.
NASDA said the awards celebrate the commitment, experience and public service of leaders who have worked closely with producers while helping shape agricultural policy and programs. These officials have supported farming operations, environmental stewardship, food production, and rural economies through decades of service.
Recipients were recognized in three service categories, with three leaders honored for more than 20 years of service, five for at least 15 years, and six for 10 years or more.

During the ceremony, NASDA CEO Ted McKinney highlighted the value of long-term leadership in agriculture. “Having served in these roles over 10, 20 to nearly 30 years, adds up to countless hours members have worked day-in and day-out with farmers to find the best ways to innovate how we grow our food and fiber, care for our environment and support local communities in good times and hard times.”
He added, “Going beyond service to their local farmers, ranchers and food producers, these members have given their experience and expertise to NASDA to help hone federal regulation and craft policy that works better for all Americans, farmers, ranchers and consumers alike. We thank them for their dedication and working with us to ensure American agriculture continues to grow ‘deep roots’ for a ‘bountiful future.’”
The organization also recognized John Baugh, former Director of Agricultural Services and Regulations at Purdue University. Baugh recently retired after more than 30 years of service. Throughout his career, he worked closely with NASDA members and contributed to efforts that supported U.S. farmers and ranchers.
For more than a century, NASDA has brought together the nation’s agriculture commissioners, secretaries and directors to address important issues affecting agriculture. The organization represents all 50 states and four U.S. territories and serves as a united voice on matters affecting food production, trade, environmental stewardship and rural development.
The new Years of Service Ceremony reflects NASDA’s commitment to celebrating strong leadership within agriculture. By recognizing individuals who have dedicated many years to serving producers and communities, the organization hopes to highlight the importance of experience, collaboration, and public service.
NASDA plans to continue the awards program annually and will recognize members with service ranging from 10 years to more than 25 years. The inaugural ceremony sets the stage for future recognition of leaders whose work strengthens American agriculture and supports the long-term success of the farming industry.
