Ontario farm groups and government renew the 4R Nutrient Stewardship agreement

Several key agricultural organizations and the provincial government have renewed the Memorandum of Cooperation for the 4R Nutrient Stewardship program for a third term.

The agreement brings together the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario, Fertilizer Canada, Grain Farmers of Ontario, the Ontario Agri-Business Association, the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Agribusiness. Together, they aim to support responsible nutrient use while helping farmers remain productive and profitable.

The 4R Nutrient Stewardship program is based on four simple principles known as Right Source, Right Rate, Right Time, and Right Place. These principles guide farmers in applying fertilizers in ways that match crop needs. This helps crops grow well while reducing nutrient losses to soil, air, and water.

Ontario’s approach focuses on a voluntary certification program. Nutrient service providers, such as agricultural retailers and trained professionals, are reviewed through independent third-party audits. This process ensures that science-based practices are followed correctly and consistently across farms.

“Through this renewed Memorandum of Cooperation, Ontario is supporting farmers in practicing sustainable nutrient management, helping to protect water bodies, maintain soil health and increase profitability. Our government is honoured to be part of the 4R initiative and continue working with our partners toward a stronger, more resilient agri-food sector,” said Trevor Jones, Minister Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness.

In 2025, more than 1.4 million acres in Ontario were certified under the 4R program. This shows strong participation from farmers and advisors and highlights growing trust in the program’s benefits. The renewed agreement builds this progress by supporting best management practices that suit Ontario’s different soils, climates, and farming systems.

Through continued cooperation, the program helps improve soil health, protect water quality, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. It also supports climate smart agriculture by balancing environmental care with strong crop yields and economic returns.

“The renewal of this agreement underscores Ontario’s leadership in adopting science-based nutrient management," said Michael Bourque, President and CEO, Fertilizer Canada. "4R Nutrient Stewardship gives farmers practical tools to improve efficiency, protect water and soil resources, and strengthen the long-term resilience of the province’s agricultural sector. We value the continued partnership with government and farm organizations to advance measurable, accountable sustainability across Ontario.”

Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. We also have a part-time employee, Brock. My dad started the farm in 1980. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.

I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.

I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!
