PEI Dairy Farmer Earns Regional Recognition for Innovation and Leadership

Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers (COYF) has named Deanna Doctor of Kensington, Prince Edward Island, as the 2026 Atlantic Regional honouree. The recognition celebrates her achievements in dairy farming, leadership, and commitment to agricultural innovation.

Over the past decade, Deanna has played an important role in expanding her family’s dairy operation. Working alongside her father, she helped increase the farm’s land base and production capacity while transitioning the herd to purebred registered Jersey cattle. The farm has also adopted advanced technology, including virtual fencing systems that support modern grazing management practices.

Deanna oversees many key areas of the farm’s daily operations. Her responsibilities include herd health management, milking, and grazing programs. In addition to managing these duties, she is raising four children and actively supporting the growth of Canada’s dairy sector.

Her contributions extend beyond the farm. Deanna serves on the boards of Jersey Canada and the Kensington Co-op, helping strengthen the agricultural community and support industry development.

The Atlantic regional event took place in Nova Scotia and brought together farmers, industry leaders, sponsors, and community members. Participants visited local agricultural businesses, including a dairy farm, an apple storage and packing facility, and other value-added agricultural operations. The event highlighted the importance of collaboration, innovation, and diversification within the farming sector.

Government representatives attended the gathering to recognize the achievements of regional farmers and celebrate agricultural success. The event also reflected the growing role of women in agriculture, with 2026 being recognized as the Year of the Woman Farmer in Prince Edward Island.

“This year’s Atlantic regional event brought together a very large number of alumni and industry leaders representing potato, horticulture and dairy, to name a few!  Value-added direct marketing agriculture was highlighted at Scotia Gold, cider production at Spurr Brothers Farms and world-class wine at Luckett Vineyards!  Deanna has an amazing story and extreme passion for the dairy industry!  She will represent the Atlantic region very well at the COYF National Event in Vancouver this November!” said Ryan Mercer, Vice President of COYF.

According to COYF representatives, the event showcased a wide range of agricultural industries, including dairy, horticulture, and potato production. Organizers praised Deanna’s dedication, passion, and leadership, noting that she is an excellent representative for the Atlantic region.

Deanna will now advance to the national COYF competition, which will be held in Vancouver, British Columbia, in November 2026. There, regional honourees from across Canada will compete for the national title.
