The Conservative leader will be back in Ottawa this fall

The leader of the Conservative Party of Canada is headed back to Ottawa.

Pierre Poilievre received 40,548 votes, or 80.4 per cent of support from voters in Aug. 18’s by-election in Battle River-Crowfoot, Elections Canada data says.

“Thank you very much to the great people of Battle River-Crowfoot,” he told supporters in his victory speech. If I stand before you here today, it is by the grace of God and good generosity of so many people.”

The next closest candidate, Bonnie Critchley, who ran as an Independent, received just over 5,000 votes, shy of 10 per cent of the total vote.

With his win in Alberta, Poilievre has regained a seat in the House of Commons and can fulfill his duties as leader of the opposition. Andrew Scheer acted as the interim opposition leader after the 2025 federal election.

In his victory speech, Poilievre committed to pushing back against Liberal policies that don’t benefit Canadians.

“This fall as Parliament returns, we will not only oppose out of control Liberal inflation, crime, immigration, cost of living, and housing prices, but we will propose real solutions for safe streets, secure borders, a stronger and sovereign country with bigger take home pay for our people,” he said.

The Conservatives are also open to working with any party to ensure Canada remains strong, he added.

Online, multiple people congratulated Poilievre on his victory.

“Canadians look forward to having your strong, common-sense leadership back in Parliament,” said John Barlow, the Alberta MP for Foothills and the shadow minister of agriculture.

“Congratulations to Pierre Poilievre on returning to the House of Commons, and gaining the honour of representing the people of Battle River-Crowfoot in Parliament,” Prime Minister Carney said.

Parliament is scheduled to resume on Sept. 15.
