Funding call targets PRRSV gaps and broader swine disease control

The National Pork Board (NPB) is calling for research proposals to strengthen swine health and support producers. Two opportunities are available: a focused PRRSV research call with a firm deadline, and an open swine health call that accepts proposals year round.

The PRRSV call targets Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus, a top challenge for pork producers. NPB is seeking studies that close knowledge gaps in immunology and virus traits, improved diagnostics, and practical tools for prevention and response. Projects that advance biosecurity, bioexclusion, and biocontainment are encouraged. The submission deadline for PRRSV proposals is September 15, 2025.

The second opportunity is an open RFP for swine health that looks beyond a single disease. It welcomes proposals aimed at prevention, control, and elimination of endemic and foreign animal diseases. Work that strengthens preparedness and response capacity across farms, laboratories, and supply chains is in scope. This open call accepts proposals at any time, allowing teams to submit when ready.

Researchers, veterinarians, university teams, and industry partners can apply. Proposals that translate science into practical solutions for producers are prioritized. Clear objectives, strong methods, and pathways for real farm adoption will help applications stand out.

Both RFPs aim to deliver timely results that protect pig health, improve farm resilience, and support a stable pork supply. Interested applicants should prepare concise plans, realistic timelines, and budgets that match deliverables. By advancing diagnostics, prevention, and biosecurity, these projects will help producers manage disease risk and safeguard animal welfare.

T.K. Cheung Lecture in Animal Science: "Using science to assess and improve the welfare of dairy cattle"

Dan Weary is a Professor at the University of British Columbia. Dan did his BSc and MSc at McGill and Doctorate at Oxford before co-founding UBC’s Animal Welfare Program where he now co-directs this active research group. His research focuses on understanding the perspectives of animals and applying these insights to develop methods of assessing animal welfare and improving the lives of animals. His work has helped drive changes in practices (including the adoption of higher milk rations for calves and pain management for disbudding) and housing methods (including the adoption of social housing for pre-weaned calves). He also studies cow comfort and lameness, social interactions among cows, and interactions between cows, human handlers and technologies like automated millking systems that are increasingly used on farms. His presentation will outline key questions in cattle welfare, highlight recent UBC research addressing them, and showcase innovative methods for improving the lives of cattle and their caretakers.
