New AEM report shows how technology helps farmers save resources

A new study highlights how farmers are using advanced technology to produce more with fewer inputs – saving money, conserve natural resources, and ensure a strong and stable food supply chain.

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), in partnership with leading agricultural groups, has released an updated report showcasing the major benefits of precision agriculture across the United States.

The study reveals that precision agriculture practices have led to significant reductions in resource use. Fertilizer use has dropped by 8%, avoiding the application of 4 billion pounds, with an additional 7 billion pounds still possible. Herbicide use has declined by 9%, preventing 54 million pounds from entering the environment. Farmers also saved 147 million gallons of fuel, which is equal to removing nearly 283,000 cars from the road.

Water efficiency has also seen remarkable progress. The report shows savings equal to filling 824,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools, with an additional 20% improvement still achievable. These results emphasize how modern farming methods not only benefit farmers but also contribute to environmental sustainability.

Precision agriculture relies on tools such as GPS guidance, soil sensors, drones, and data-driven decision-making systems. These technologies help farmers apply inputs only where needed, reducing waste and improving productivity. By combining innovation with responsible practices, U.S. farmers are meeting the challenge of producing more food for a growing population while caring for the land and water resources.

As AEM leaders emphasize, this shift is transforming the future of farming. “Precision agriculture allows farmers to do more with less, conserve resources, and stabilize the food supply,” the report notes.

Overall, the updated data makes it clear that technology-driven agriculture is not just a trend but a critical step toward a more efficient, sustainable, and resilient food system in the United States.
