New retrofit upgrades enable multi-task autonomy to ease labor pressure and boost field efficiency

PTx is expanding its autonomous farming technology offerings with the introduction of new OutRun Tillage updates, designed to help farmers address labor shortages and improve field efficiency during critical seasons.

Speaking with Farms.com, Darcy Cook, Senior Director of Autonomous Solutions at PTX, explained that the OutRun platform is built to support multiple autonomous farming tasks using retrofit technology that can be added to existing farm equipment.

Cook said the system was developed to help growers facing ongoing labor challenges during busy planting and harvest periods. Instead of requiring farmers to purchase entirely new machinery, the retrofit kit upgrades tractors already on the farm with autonomous capabilities.

The OutRun platform first launched with a grain cart application that allowed operators to automate grain cart functions during harvest. According to Cook, the system helped farmers better allocate workers to other important jobs when labor availability was limited.

This year, PTX expanded the platform with a tillage application that allows the same autonomous system to perform multiple field operations.

Spring tillage can become a major bottleneck ahead of planting, especially when farmers are racing to get seed into the ground during ideal weather conditions. By running tillage equipment autonomously in parallel with planting operations, growers can improve timing and overall productivity.

Cook also highlighted the value of autonomous tillage during fall harvest.

During that period, most workers are focused on removing crops from the field, leaving tillage lower on the priority list. Autonomous tillage systems allow equipment to continue operating independently while farmers manage other harvest responsibilities.

What makes this system so great is that it can be monitored remotely through a smartphone, giving operators the ability to oversee field work without remaining in the tractor cab.
