Corn innovation winners boost demand beyond food, feed, and fuel!

Two innovative companies, Citroniq and Future Origins, have been selected as winners of the 2026 Radicle Corn Challenge, a global competition designed to create new market opportunities for U.S. corn growers. The announcement was made during the Bio Innovations North America conference in Omaha, Nebraska.

The challenge was launched by Radicle Growth and supported by leading U.S. corn grower organizations. Its goal was to identify technologies capable of creating significant new demand for corn outside traditional markets such as food, feed, and fuel. The competition attracted participants from around the world that are working on advanced products made from corn and corn-derived feedstocks.

As winners, Citroniq and Future Origins will receive investment from Radicle Growth and the coalition of corn organizations behind the initiative. Both companies are developing innovative solutions that could help expand the use of corn in high-value industries.

“What distinguished these companies was not only the value of the market opportunities they are pursuing, but also the strength of their technology platforms and their pathway to scale,” said Neal Gutterson, Partner and Chief Technology Officer at Radicle Growth.

He continued, “Citroniq and Future Origins are applying innovative chemistry and biotechnology to convert corn-derived feedstock into products that can compete in large, established markets. Their ability to leverage existing agricultural supply chains and replace non-renewable alternatives while delivering meaningful sustainability benefits makes them particularly compelling examples of how innovation can expand the role of corn in the bioeconomy.”

Citroniq is focused on transforming the plastics industry. The company has developed a commercial-scale platform that produces 100 percent bio-based polypropylene using ethanol derived from corn. Through its proprietary production process, Citroniq creates carbon-negative materials that reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

“This Challenge is all about backing bold companies that add real value to every bushel and proving just how versatile U.S. corn can be,” said Paul Gieselman, Iowa Corn Promotion Board President.

Its technology provides sustainable alternatives for one of the world's most commonly used plastics. The products can be used in packaging, consumer goods, automotive manufacturing, and industrial applications. By converting corn ethanol into advanced plastic materials, the company creates a new opportunity for corn growers while supporting sustainability goals.

Citroniq leadership said the award recognizes the company's efforts to build an economic pathway for sustainable plastics. The company believes its technology can help drive future demand for U.S. corn while supporting a more environmentally friendly plastics industry.

“We’re honored to receive the 2026 Radicle Corn Challenge Award,” said Kelly Knopp, CEO & Co-Founder of Citroniq. “This recognition is especially meaningful to our team and validates our goal of creating an economic path to sustainable plastics. We’re proud to be part of writing the next chapter for U.S. corn demand, to drive a broader shift toward a more sustainable and resilient plastics industry.”

Future Origins is working to replace ingredients traditionally produced from palm oil and fossil-based resources. The company uses fermentation technology and renewable feedstocks, including corn-derived dextrose, to manufacture ingredients commonly found in home and personal care products.

Founded in 2022 as a joint venture between major global partners, Future Origins has already demonstrated its technology at large scale. The company successfully completed production campaigns and validated products with strategic partners. It is now moving toward commercial-scale manufacturing in the United States using corn-based feedstocks.

“We are thrilled to win the Radicle Corn Challenge,” said Priti Pharkya, Chief Business Officer and Founder of Future Origins. “By transforming corn into existing widely used home and personal care ingredients, Future Origins is opening an entirely new high-value use for Midwest corn. It’s great to have the growers join us in the journey and build awareness, as the market opportunity here is massive.”

Company leaders said the technology opens a new high-value market for corn by transforming it into ingredients that are already widely used by consumers. They also highlighted the significant market potential for sustainable alternatives in personal care and household products.

The winners were selected through an extensive evaluation process. Radicle Growth and representatives from participating corn organizations assessed applicants based on scientific innovation, technical strength, commercial readiness, market opportunities, and potential impact on future corn demand.

According to Radicle Growth, both companies stood out because of their strong technology platforms and clear pathways to commercial growth. Their solutions use innovative chemistry and biotechnology to transform corn-derived materials into products that can compete in large global markets. In addition, both companies can leverage existing agricultural supply chains while offering environmental and sustainability benefits.

The Radicle Corn Challenge was created to encourage the development of durable new markets for corn. Organizers believe innovative technologies are essential for expanding demand and increasing value for corn growers. By supporting entrepreneurs and emerging businesses, the initiative aims to strengthen the long-term future of the agricultural sector.

“A top priority for Iowa Corn is finding new and innovative ways to expand market demand for corn,” said Paul Gieselman, Iowa Corn Promotion Board President and farmer from Morning Sun, Iowa. “Companies like Citroniq and Future Origins are leading the way by turning our harvest into valuable bio-based products. This Challenge is all about backing bold companies that add real value to every bushel and proving just how versatile U.S. corn can be.”

Twelve major U.S. corn grower organizations sponsored the challenge. The effort reflects a shared commitment to finding new opportunities for corn producers and increasing the versatility of corn-based products.

Industry leaders involved in the challenge emphasized that expanding demand remains a top priority for growers. They noted that innovations such as sustainable plastics, bio-based chemicals, and renewable consumer product ingredients can create additional value from every bushel of corn produced.

The selection of Citroniq and Future Origins highlights the growing role of agriculture in emerging bioeconomy. As industries search for renewable alternatives to fossil-based materials, corn is increasingly being recognized as a valuable feedstock for the next generation of sustainable products.

By investing in breakthrough technologies, the Radicle Corn Challenge is helping create new value chains, strengthen rural economies, and support long-term growth opportunities for corn growers. The success of these winning companies demonstrates how innovation can open new markets while delivering environmental and economic benefits across the agricultural sector.
