Long-awaited rainfall is arriving in key drought areas while a strengthening El Niño may reshape North American weather patterns this autumn.
Farmers across several drought-affected regions of the United States could soon receive much-needed moisture as changing weather patterns begin to emerge, according to the latest Weekly Weather Intelligence Report from Nutrien meteorologist Eric Snodgrass.
The outlook points to rainfall reaching some of the driest agricultural areas, including Oklahoma, eastern Kansas, Arkansas, and portions of the Red River Valley of the North. For producers who have endured weeks of limited precipitation and worsening soil moisture conditions, the forecast offers a welcome sign of improvement heading into the late summer and early fall period.
Snodgrass noted that high-resolution forecast models are also indicating a potential rain event for parts of the Texas Panhandle, where some areas have seen little meaningful precipitation in recent weeks. While confidence remains moderate regarding exact rainfall totals, the possibility of moisture arriving in key production areas is encouraging for farmers monitoring crop development and pasture conditions.
Wind and Corn Pollination
Snodgrass shared an interesting theory about wind. Winds across the corridor from the Rockies to the Appalachians have shown a steady strengthening trend since 1976. In contrast, July winds throughout the Corn Belt have remained unusually weak for several consecutive years, creating stagnant air conditions that may have contributed to the pollination challenges and irregular ear development observed during this year's Pro Farmer Crop Tour.
Severe Weather Threat Remains in Coming Weeks
Although rainfall is expected to benefit many dry regions, severe weather risks remain in several parts of North America.
Areas of the Red River Valley of the North, portions of the western Corn Belt, and sections of the Gulf and Carolina coasts could experience severe storms in the near term. Growers are encouraged to monitor local forecasts as weather systems move across these regions.
Meanwhile, much of Texas and the southern Plains are expected to remain locked in another week of intense heat. Forecast models suggest that temperatures in these areas will continue running well above seasonal averages, adding stress to crops and livestock operations already dealing with prolonged dryness.
Atmospheric Changes Point to a Fall Pattern Shift
One of the most important developments highlighted in the report is the continued appearance of a subtropical jet stream signature.
According to Snodgrass, this signal could indicate a broader atmospheric pattern shift developing during late August and early September. While the exact timing and impact remain uncertain, the emerging setup supports the possibility of increased precipitation across much of the United States as autumn approaches.
Forecast confidence remains challenged by seasonal transition dynamics, with substantial differences appearing between major global weather models. However, meteorologists are paying close attention to recurring signals that suggest a wetter weather regime may replace the persistent dryness that has characterized recent growing seasons.
Strongest El Niño on Record Continues to Intensify
Another major factor shaping long-range forecasts is the rapid strengthening of El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean.
Snodgrass reports that sea surface temperature anomalies in the Niño 3.4 region have climbed to approximately 2.85 degrees Celsius above average and could exceed 3.5 degrees Celsius before gradually weakening next year.
If those projections are realized, this El Niño event could become the strongest observed in modern meteorological records.
Strong El Niño events often influence global weather patterns, affecting precipitation, temperature, and storm tracks across North America and beyond. For agricultural producers, these shifts can significantly impact planting decisions, crop yields, harvest conditions, and transportation logistics.
Wetter Outlook Emerging for U.S. Agriculture
Looking ahead over the next several weeks, ensemble forecasting systems are providing a clearer picture than individual model runs, according to Snodgrass.
The highest probability of receiving more than one inch of rain during the next two weeks is concentrated along the Gulf Coast, across Florida, the upper Midwest, and parts of the Canadian Prairies.
In contrast, the eastern Corn Belt, most of Texas, and areas stretching from Montana and Wyoming into portions of the southern Prairies are expected to receive less than half an inch of precipitation.
Beyond the immediate forecast period, conditions may become increasingly favorable for soil moisture recovery. Snodgrass said the combination of a strengthening subtropical jet stream and a powerful El Niño supports expectations for a wetter autumn across most of the United States.
Exceptions may include parts of the Pacific Northwest and potentially portions of the Great Lakes region, where precipitation signals are less robust.
“The fall precipitation regime should look much different from recent dry falls,” the report noted, suggesting soil moisture profiles could begin improving after early September.
Hurricane Activity Tells a Different Story
While weather patterns over land are becoming more active, tropical conditions remain sharply divided between the Pacific and Atlantic basins.
The eastern Pacific continues to generate multiple tropical systems, with six areas of interest being monitored, though none currently threaten Hawaii.
In contrast, Atlantic hurricane activity remains unusually subdued despite approaching the historical peak of hurricane season. Snodgrass indicated that prevailing atmospheric conditions and the position of the Bermuda High are steering potential Atlantic development away from land, potentially resulting in a hurricane season that ends well below average if current trends continue.
What Farmers Should Watch
For growers planning harvest strategies, fall fertilizer applications, or winter crop establishment, the biggest takeaway, as noted above, may be the growing evidence of a wetter weather pattern developing after early September.
Signs of seasonal transition are becoming increasingly visible, including cooler air intrusions across northern regions, the emergence of a stronger subtropical jet stream, and the continued intensification of El Niño conditions.
While near-term forecasts remain volatile, particularly as summer gives way to fall, Snodgrass advises producers to place greater confidence in ensemble forecasting tools rather than relying on individual model runs.
