Early Field Scouting Helps Growers Prevent Sunflower Moth Damage Before Feeding Begins

Banded sunflower moths remain one of the most important insect pests affecting sunflower production. If left unmanaged, their larvae feed on developing florets and seeds, reducing pollination, lowering seed quality, and decreasing final yields. Regular field scouting allows growers to detect infestations before serious damage occurs and helps determine whether treatment is necessary.

Adam Varenhorst, Associate Professor & SDSU Extension Field Crop Entomologist, together with Philip Rozeboom, Patrick Wagner, and Brad McManus, emphasize that timely scouting is the foundation of successful banded sunflower moth management. Monitoring fields before eggs hatch gives growers the best opportunity to protect sunflower heads from feeding damage.

Adult banded sunflower moths are small, cream-colored insects with a noticeable dark brown band across their wings. They are commonly active from late June through July and lay tiny white eggs on sunflower bracts during the late bud stage. These eggs hatch in about one week, and the young caterpillars immediately begin feeding on the flower head.

The caterpillars change color as they grow, starting as white or cream before becoming pink, red, and eventually green. Their feeding reduces seed development and can significantly affect crop quality if populations become too high.

Growers should begin scouting when sunflower plants reach the R3 growth stage. Fields should be inspected at several locations by checking bracts for eggs and counting adult moths across the field rather than only at field edges. A hand lens can make it easier to identify the tiny eggs during inspections.

Economic threshold tools help determine whether insecticide applications are needed by considering pest numbers, crop value, and treatment costs. This approach supports better pest management while avoiding unnecessary applications.

After completing their feeding, mature caterpillars move into the soil, where they pupate and survive through winter before emerging as adults the following growing season.
