New oversight measures aim to improve animal care, enforcement, inspections, and public awareness across the United States
New initiatives aimed at improving companion animal welfare across the country have been announced by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The announcement highlights efforts to strengthen oversight, enhance care standards, improve enforcement activities, and build greater public awareness about animal welfare issues.
The effort reflects a coordinated approach to ensuring that companion animals, including dogs and horses, receive proper care and protection under existing animal welfare laws.
A major focus of the plan is updating standards of care for animals covered under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). USDA officials are reviewing thousands of public comments received through a nationwide information-gathering process. Based on this feedback, the agency plans to move forward with regulatory proposals designed to strengthen animal care requirements. These updates are expected to address important areas such as humane treatment, medical care, exercise, socialization, record keeping, and research practices involving animals.
Another key initiative involves improving communication with licensed animal breeders. USDA plans to distribute thousands of informational notices to breeding facilities to remind operators about their responsibilities under federal regulations. Officials believe that regular communication and education can help improve compliance and encourage higher standards of animal care.
“Today’s announcement will lay out new standards to improve animal welfare, deploy new training and staff to continuously monitor facilities under our care, and build further public awareness to protect our companion animals,” said Brooke L. Rollins. “Today’s Strikeforce meeting will continue to build and develop policies to protect our nation’s animals.”
To strengthen enforcement efforts, USDA recently established the Animal Protection Bureau (APB). This specialized group focuses on enhancing oversight and supporting the enforcement of animal welfare laws nationwide. The bureau works closely with inspectors, veterinarians, investigators, legal experts, and program leaders to identify potential issues and address risks before they become larger problems.
The Animal Protection Bureau also supports compliance reviews and investigations related to animal welfare programs.
