Students can apply for scholarships by sharing ideas to solve agriculture challenges
Applications are now being accepted for the 2027 Agriculture Student Scholarship, a program designed to support students interested in building a future in the agriculture industry. The scholarship encourages young people to share their ideas and contribute to solving some of the challenges facing agriculture today.
The program is funded by the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan and offers four scholarships to eligible students. One grand prize winner will receive a scholarship worth $6,000, while three additional students will each receive scholarships valued at $3,000. The awards recognize creativity, innovation, and commitment to the future of agriculture.
This year's theme focuses on finding solutions to challenges in agriculture. Students are encouraged to think about the issues affecting the industry and suggest practical ways to address them. Topics can include technology, sustainability, collaboration, public awareness, education, business development, and other areas that can help strengthen agriculture.
“By supporting students who are passionate about agriculture and encouraging them to find solutions to real-world challenges, we’re investing in the next generation of agricultural leaders. We’re committed to giving young Canadians the opportunities they need to help shape a more innovative, sustainable and resilient sector for generations to come,” said Heath MacDonald, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.
To participate, applicants must submit either a three-minute video or a 1,000-word essay. The submission should explain the student's ideas and demonstrate how those ideas could help improve the agriculture sector. The competition provides an opportunity for students to express their creativity while exploring important agricultural issues.
The scholarship is open to Grade 12 students and recent high school graduates who live in Saskatchewan. Students who have graduated within the past two school years and plan to begin agriculture-related post-secondary studies in the fall of 2027 are eligible to apply. The program aims to support students as they prepare for careers that will contribute to the future success of agriculture.
Agriculture remains a vital sector that provides food, creates jobs, and supports communities across Canada. However, the industry continues to face challenges such as climate change, environmental sustainability, technological adoption, labor shortages, and the need for increased public understanding of farming. By encouraging students to think about these topics, the scholarship helps inspire the next generation of agricultural leaders.
Government leaders have emphasized the importance of investing in young people who are interested in agriculture. They believe that supporting students today will help create a more innovative, resilient, and sustainable industry in the future. The scholarship program not only rewards academic ambition but also encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
"Supporting tomorrow’s agriculture leaders is essential to the long-term success of our province. The Agriculture Student Scholarship recognizes outstanding students and celebrates their contributions to the future of the industry," said David Marit, Saskatchewan Minister of Agriculture.
Past scholarship recipients have highlighted the value of the program in giving students a platform to share their ideas. Competition allows young people to contribute to discussions that can shape the future of agriculture while gaining recognition for their efforts and achievements.
The scholarship initiative is supported through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a long-term investment aimed at strengthening Canada's agriculture and agri-food sectors. The partnership supports programs that improve competitiveness, encourage innovation, and increase resilience throughout the industry. Through collaboration between federal, provincial, and territorial governments, the initiative helps create opportunities for future generations of agricultural professionals.
Programs such as the Agriculture Student Scholarship demonstrate the continued commitment to education, innovation, and leadership development within the agriculture sector. By encouraging students to explore real-world challenges and propose meaningful solutions, the scholarship helps prepare future professionals for successful careers in agriculture.
"I think it's a great opportunity for students to get their ideas out there and be heard. If young people get involved early, it benefits the industry as a whole," said Carson Green, 2026 Agriculture Student Scholarship grand prize winner.
Students interested in agriculture, food production, environmental stewardship, agribusiness, and related fields can use this opportunity to showcase their ideas and compete for financial support for their education. The scholarship not only helps reduce the cost of post-secondary studies but also promotes engagement in an industry that plays an essential role in Canada's economy and food security.
