A high-profile visit to the University of Guelph highlights Canada’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, cutting-edge research, and food security.
The University of Guelph welcomed two prominent federal representatives for a day of engagement and discovery on Friday, October 3rd. Dominique O’Rourke, Member of Parliament for Guelph, hosted the Honourable Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, for a comprehensive tour of the university’s cutting-edge agricultural facilities.
“Our government is proud to be a partner in helping grow Canada’s agriculture sector here in Guelph and right across the country,” said Minister MacDonald.
“From farm gate to plate, helping Canadian farmers put healthy food on tables across the country – and around the world – is important for building a stronger Canada and keeping the sector strong for years to come.”
The visit began at the University’s Crop Science Growth Facilities, where Minister MacDonald and MP O’Rourke observed federally funded, student-led research projects. The facilities boast 59 research laboratories, 11 large walk-in growth rooms, and 50 controlled-environment growth cabinets.
These resources support advanced plant science research, including studies on crop performance under various environmental conditions—critical work in the face of climate change and global food security challenges.
“It was a pleasure to welcome Minister MacDonald and MP O'Rourke to the University of Guelph and share how our work in agri-food innovation, research and industry collaboration supports Canada’s economic and national security,” said Dr. Rene Van Acker, president and vice-chancellor.
“Our researchers and students are driving solutions that enhance food system resilience, climate-smart agriculture and innovation—key priorities for the federal government and for Canada’s future.”
The delegation also toured the Ontario Dairy Research Centre in Elora, a 175,000-square-foot facility at the forefront of dairy innovation.
Researchers there highlighted projects funded by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Cluster program, as well as NSERC Alliance and Discovery grants. The work focuses on dairy nutrition, animal health, and sustainable production practices—advancing Canada’s leadership in the global dairy sector.
“The University of Guelph continues to lead the way in agricultural innovation,” said MP O’Rourke.
“Today’s visit showcased the strength of our local researchers and the importance of federal partnerships in building a sustainable and resilient food system for all Canadians. This leadership absolutely holds the key to some of the planet’s most pressing issues of food production, food security and agri-innovation and technology.”
