Veteran agriculture leader joins FVGC to strengthen grower advocacy
The Fruit and Vegetable Growers of Canada (FVGC) has named Stephen Heckbert as its new Executive Director. He officially assumed the role on September 8 and brings more than 25 years of leadership experience in communications, advocacy, and organizational management.
Heckbert is well known within Canada's agriculture sector. Before joining FVGC, he served as Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Pork Council, where he worked closely with industry stakeholders, governments, and producers. His experience in agriculture and public affairs is expected to help FVGC continue its efforts to represent fruit and vegetable growers across Canada.
FVGC is a national organization that speaks on behalf of growers producing more than 120 different fruit and vegetable commodities. The association works to address industry challenges and advocate for policies that support the growth and success of Canadian agriculture.
The appointment comes at an important time for the fresh produce sector. Farmers are facing rising production costs, labour shortages, supply chain pressures, and uncertainty in international trade. These challenges have increased the need for strong industry representation and effective communication with government leaders and policymakers.
“Since 1922, FVGC has been an important voice in advocating for growers across the country who produce more than 120 different commodities. Rising costs and trade uncertainty are creating huge challenges for Canada’s fruit and vegetable sector,” said Marcus Janzen, President of the FVGC Board of Directors. “Stephen’s proven track record in advocacy, effective communications and enterprise leadership make him well prepared to advance our critical work.”
FVGC has recently undergone a transition period focused on strengthening its operations and ensuring it can effectively represent members. The organization has worked to rebuild momentum and position itself for future growth. Heckbert's leadership will help continue that progress while supporting growers and industry stakeholders across the country.
“Leading FVGC through this period of transition amid global uncertainty has been a collaborative effort,” said Carla Ventin, outgoing Interim Executive Director. “Together with the board and staff, we have strengthened the organization and ensured that FVGC continues to be a strong and effective voice for growers in Ottawa. I look forward to working with Stephen to ensure a smooth transition and continued progress.”
One of FVGC's major priorities is helping ensure food security in Canada. Fruit and vegetable growers play a critical role in supplying fresh produce to Canadian consumers while supporting rural communities and regional economies. As demand for locally grown food continues to increase, industry leaders believe there is significant opportunity for growth within the sector.
