Students build benches for IPM 2025 in Niagara Region

The International Plowing Match & Rural Expo (IPM) Local Committee has launched the Bench Sponsorship Project for the upcoming 2025 event in West Niagara.

This initiative invites individuals and businesses to sponsor commemorative benches for $500 each, helping enhance the visitor experience while supporting local youth and education.

Each bench will be placed throughout the IPM Tented City during the event, offering a place to rest and relax. After the event, sponsors can keep their bench, often placing it in homes, businesses, or community spaces.

The project is a unique learning opportunity for high school students across Niagara Region, including those from West Niagara Secondary School, Heritage Christian School, and A.N. Myer Secondary School. These students are responsible for designing and building the benches, gaining real-world experience in carpentry and woodworking.

“This is an incredible learning opportunity for students” said Steve Ecker, IPM Bench Sponsorship Project Coordinator. “They get to work on a real-world project, apply their skills and contribute to an event that brings thousands of people together. Knowing their work will be used and appreciated by visitors makes it even more meaningful.”

Support from local businesses is making the project possible. Smithville Home Hardware has donated all the building materials needed. “Giving back to the community is at the heart of what we do,” said Mike Keizer, Smithville Home Hardware owner. “We are proud to support this initiative that not only benefits the IPM but also gives students hands on experience in woodworking and craftsmanship.

Each bench will include a plaque recognizing the sponsor. The project not only supports students but also offers long-term value to sponsors and the community.
