New Award Honors Swine Science Leaders
A new global award is now open for nominations to honor educators in swine science. The NOVUS Distinguished Academic Training & Innovation Award will be presented at the 16th International Symposium on Digestive Physiology of Pigs (DPP) from May 20-23, 2025, in the United States. The recipient will receive $7,500 in recognition of their contributions to swine education and research.
This award, a collaboration between NOVUS and DPP, aims to highlight the role of educators in advancing the swine industry through research and training. “DPP has the reputation of being a highly scientific conference. Its reputation for focusing on science instead of the more commercial aspects of the industry is a mirror of the environment the nominees are working in,” said Marisol Castillo, Executive Manager of Global Swine Solutions at NOVUS. “Our goal in creating this award – the first of its kind for the swine team at NOVUS – is to recognize the work academic scientists are doing. DPP is the perfect place to celebrate swine science.”
Dr. Thomas E. Burkey, Professor at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and President of the DPP-North America Board, supports this initiative. He acknowledges NOVUS for its commitment to fostering academic excellence in swine nutrition and physiology.
The award is open to higher education professionals worldwide who have significantly contributed to the education and development of students in digestive physiology of pigs, swine nutrition, and related fields.
“We’re seeking individuals who effectively integrate cutting-edge research into their teaching and training programs, utilizing innovative pedagogical approaches to engage students,” said Burkey. “Additionally, this individual should possess strong mentorship skills, inspiring students and colleagues alike, and fostering a collaborative learning environment that extends beyond the classroom. A hallmark of an ideal candidate is their ability to blend scientific rigor with practical applications that address current challenges in the pork industry and specifically, digestive physiology of pigs.”
Winning this award brings recognition and professional growth beyond the monetary prize. It highlights an educator’s role in shaping future industry professionals and encourages innovation in teaching and research.
