Weather, soil health, fertility and hybrid selection all influence crop yields, making efficient nutrient management a key priority for farmers.

Pierre Pagé, Regional Sales Manager for Synagri Ontario, discussed practical ways farmers can reduce fertilizer losses while improving crop yields during the 2026 Great Ontario Yield Tour at the end of August.

During the presentation, Page emphasized that successful fertilizer management is not simply about applying more nutrients, but about using inputs efficiently to achieve better returns.

Pagé asked participants to identify the major factors that influence yield. Weather, planting date, and fertilizer placement were among the factors mentioned. He then highlighted research from the University of Illinois and Dr. Fred Below, which ranks several key factors according to their influence on crop productivity.

According to the presentation, weather is the leading factor affecting yield when basic soil and field conditions are properly managed. Fertility ranks second, followed by hybrid selection. However, Page stressed that this ranking assumes important foundational issues, including soil compaction and drainage, are already under control.

Water management can become the most important factor when drainage or compaction problems limit crop performance. Proper soil pH and effective pest management are also essential for creating favourable growing conditions.

Pagé’s message focused on improving productivity while controlling expenses. By understanding the factors that most strongly influence yield, farmers can make more informed decisions about fertilizer placement, crop management, and input investments. and input investments.
