U.S. Corn Planting Expands Soybeans Shrink in 2025

NASS Releases 2025 Planting and Grain Stock Statistics

According to the USDA’s Acreage report released by NASS, U.S. farmers planted 95.2 million acres of corn in 2025, an increase of 5% from last year. Soybean area declined to 83.4 million acres, 4% lower than in 2024.

This data follows the Prospective Plantings report from March and is based on surveys of over 67,000 farmers conducted in early June.

Corn growers plan to harvest 86.8 million acres, and 94% of the corn is biotech. Soybean harvested area is projected at 82.5 million acres, with 96% using herbicide-resistant seeds.

Cotton planting fell to 10.1 million acres, down 10% from last year. Upland cotton accounts for 9.95 million acres, and American Pima 171,000 acres. Biotech cotton planting is now 97%, a slight increase.

For wheat, all planted area totals 45.5 million acres—just 1% less than in 2024. Winter wheat makes up 33.3 million acres. Spring wheat dropped 5% to 10 million acres, while durum wheat increased to 2.11 million acres.

The Grain Stocks report notes corn stocks at 4.64 billion bushels, a 7% drop. On-farm corn stocks decreased by 16%, while off-farm rose 6%. Soybean stocks rose 4%, with increases in off-farm storage. All wheat stocks grew by 22%, including a 32% increase on farms.

Rice inventories rose, with rough rice up 15% and milled rice up 26% compared to 2024.
