Pork Industry Supports Renewal of Key North American Trade Agreement

Representatives from the United States, Mexico, and Canada recently met in Mexico City for the third round of discussions on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), one of the most significant trade agreements in North America. The agreement supports approximately $2 trillion in trade among the three countries and plays a major role in agricultural commerce.

During the meetings, industry leaders and stakeholders discussed the future of the agreement. Officials are reviewing the trade deal through annual evaluations over the next decade rather than extending it for a new 16-year term. These discussions are aimed at ensuring the agreement continues to meet the needs of all three countries.

The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) participated in the talks and emphasized its support for targeted improvements to the agreement. Organization representatives stated that maintaining a strong trade framework is important for providing long-term certainty and stability for farmers, food manufacturers, and rural communities.

The NPPC, along with members of the Agricultural Coalition for USMCA, has encouraged the U.S. government to renew the agreement. Industry groups believe the trade deal has been essential to the success of North American agriculture by improving market access and streamlining the movement of goods across borders.

“Ensuring USMCA remains intact is vital to continuing the mutually beneficial trading relationships U.S. pork enjoys with both Canada and Mexico,” said NPPC President Rob Brenneman, a pork producer from Iowa.

Trade with Mexico and Canada remains especially important to U.S. pork producers. These two countries are among the largest markets for U.S. pork exports, helping create demand for products and supporting economic activity throughout the supply chain. Strong export opportunities also contribute to farm income and business growth in rural areas.

Industry leaders note that pork exports add significant value to each hog marketed and help support thousands of jobs across the United States. Continued cooperation between the three countries is viewed as important for protecting these benefits and maintaining stable trading relationships.
