CASE suggests limits on Brazil imports and support for US ranchers

The Consumer Action for a Strong Economy (CASE) has expressed support for a proposed plan aimed at making beef more affordable for American families. The plan focuses on adjusting import rules and providing better support for local cattle producers.

According to CASE, beef prices have risen sharply in recent years, making it harder for families to afford common products like ground beef. The group believes that changes in trade policies can help bring prices down while also supporting domestic farmers.

"Ground beef prices have increased 72% since 2020, putting a staple American grocery item at risk of becoming a luxury purchase. President Trump is right to make this a priority," said CASE chairman Gerard Scimeca.

"A simple modification would support U.S. cattleman and lower prices by banning Brazilian beef exports from companies under federal investigation and prioritize market access for low dollar cuts that don't compete with U.S. premium market," said Scimeca.

One key suggestion is to restrict beef imports from certain companies in Brazil that are currently under investigation by U.S. authorities. CASE explains that allowing only law-abiding exporters to access the U.S. market would ensure fairness and protect consumers. By reallocating import quotas to trusted suppliers, the market could remain competitive without compromising standards.

Another important recommendation is to give priority to low-cost beef cuts. These include lean cuts that are commonly used for everyday meals. CASE suggests reducing import limits on such products from countries that do not directly compete with higher-quality U.S. beef. At the same time, tariffs should still apply to premium cuts that compete with domestic products, helping protect U.S. ranchers’ income.

In addition to changes in imports, the plan also highlights the need to support cattle producers in the United States. Increased access to loans and financial resources can help ranchers maintain and grow their herds. This support is seen as essential for ensuring a stable and sustainable beef supply in the future.

CASE believes that market access should be treated as a privilege, and that strong policies are needed to protect both consumers and producers. The proposal builds earlier efforts to improve beef supply and affordability, including expanding access to certain imported beef products.
