National survey gathers key data to support growing organic farming sector
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is beginning the 2025 Organic Survey, an important national effort that helps measure the growth and economic strength of organic farming across the United States. This survey is part of the Census of Agriculture Program and is conducted to give farmers, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders accurate and timely information about the organic sector.
In early December, NASS will send survey codes to producers, inviting them to complete the survey online. A full questionnaire will follow in early January for those who prefer to respond by mail. The previous Organic Survey was conducted in 2021, and the new 2025 edition aims to collect updated information about production levels, marketing methods, income, expenses, acreage, and other practices used by organic farmers and ranchers nationwide.
“Organic agriculture is a growing industry, and it is our job as a federal statistical agency to help measure this part of the agriculture sector,” said NASS Administrator Joseph Parsons. “We are excited to provide data on organic agriculture that will help inform organic producers and other industry professionals to make informed decisions for their operations.”
The survey is required by law under Title 7 USC 2204(g) Public Law 105-113, and all responses are kept confidential. Farmers and ranchers who receive the survey can complete it securely online at agcounts.usda.gov or by mail. The response deadline is February 5, 2026.
NASS will mail the survey to all known certified organic farms and ranches as well as those transitioning to organic status. Producers will be asked to share details about their acreage, production levels, sales, and production and marketing practices. This information will help determine the economic impact of organic agriculture across the nation.
Final survey results will be available on October 30, 2026. These results will support research, guide farm programs, and strengthen planning for the growing organic market.
