New roles to link USDA with tribal colleges

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has taken a significant step towards strengthening its ties with Tribal colleges by appointing a first-ever regional cadre of USDA Tribal College Liaisons. These new positions will serve vital regions where Tribal colleges are located, including the Central Plains, Southwest, and Rocky Mountain regions.

"This is an unprecedented investment in USDA’s relationship with Tribal colleges and universities as well as empowering the next generation of Tribal policy experts," remarked Betsy Rakola, Acting Director of the USDA Office of Tribal Relations.

To further empower Tribal communities, USDA has also opened applications for the Summer 2025 Tribal Food and Agriculture Policy Internships. This program is part of USDA's broader strategy to support Tribal self-determination and equity, offering students from undergraduate to post-graduate levels a chance to engage with key agricultural policies affecting their communities.

The newly appointed liaisons will work closely with Tribal colleges to facilitate access to USDA programs, aiding in educational and community development efforts. These initiatives are aligned with the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the inclusion of Tribal colleges in the land-grant college network, highlighting their essential role in providing culturally relevant education and research.

As USDA continues to hire additional Tribal College Liaisons, including a new position for the Great Lakes region, it underscores the agency's commitment to enhancing the educational landscape and economic opportunities for Native American communities through targeted support and policy development.
