Why Corn Growers Should Avoid Routine Insecticide Sprays

Avoiding Unnecessary Insecticides in Corn Fields Protects Beneficial Insects and Improves Crop Management

As corn fields move closer to harvest maturity, many growers consider fungicide treatments to help protect crops from disease and maintain yield potential. During these applications, some farmers and agricultural service providers choose to include an insecticide in the same spray mix, believing that the additional treatment is a cost-effective way to manage possible insect issues while equipment is already in the field.

However, Penn State Extension entomologist John Tooker warns that adding an insecticide without a confirmed pest problem can sometimes create more challenges than benefits.

Corn leaf aphids provide a clear example of how unnecessary insecticide use can affect crop ecosystems. Small numbers of these aphids are commonly found in corn fields, but they typically do not cause economic damage because natural enemies, including lady beetles, their larvae, and other predatory insects, help keep populations under control.

When insecticides are applied without reaching pest treatment thresholds, they can reduce beneficial insect populations that naturally suppress aphids. Although the spray may lower some aphid numbers initially, surviving pests can reproduce quickly when their predators are removed. This can lead to larger outbreaks that are more difficult to manage.

Tooker notes that severe corn leaf aphid problems are often associated with unnecessary insecticide applications that disturb the natural balance of field ecosystems.

To prevent these issues, growers should rely on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies. IPM encourages farmers to make insecticide decisions based on field scouting and economic thresholds rather than applying treatments as a routine practice. These thresholds help determine whether the expected crop benefits justify the cost and potential risks of an application.

Consistent monitoring allows growers to identify when pest populations require action. If insect levels exceed recommended limits, treatment may be necessary. When populations remain low, avoiding unnecessary insecticides can protect beneficial insects, reduce input expenses, and promote a healthier agricultural environment.
