Agriculture featured in Saskatchewan throne speech

The Saskatchewan legislature opened yesterday with the Speech from the Throne which highlighted several issues that will impact agriculture.

It was announced a new trade office will be opening in Germany. Western Canadian Wheat Growers chair Jim Wickett said this should have a positive impact on trade.

“That’s a higher value market. Sometimes it’s a little more difficult in Europe as they get a little more creative with the non-tariff trade barriers, but we still need a presence there to push Saskatchewan products,” Wickett said “I just think that sometimes the Saskatchewan voice doesn’t get heard there.”

Agriculture Minister David Marit said the province’s growth strategy includes increasing crop production to 45 million metric tonnes and livestock cash receipts to $3 billion.
