Vegreville Seed Cleaning Plant Ltd. has spent more than seven decades adapting its plant to changing farms in the counties of Minburn, Lamont, Two Hills and surrounding area but the basic job remains familiar: give growers clean seed and service they can count on.
They are bigger. So are the farms. The technology inside the plant has become considerably more sophisticated. But at Vegreville Seed Cleaning Plant, the reason for running seed through the plant hasn’t changed much at all.
Jennifer Slasynski says the fundamental job of Vegreville Seed Cleaning Plant hasn’t changed all that much.
“We still just service the farmers,” says Slasynski, manager of the farmer-owned co-op near Vegreville, Alberta. “We provide uniform, clean, weed-free seed for the producer. So that’s our goal.”
It sounds simple. Accomplishing it in 2026, however, looks different than it did when the co-op was established more than seven decades ago.
Vegreville Seed Cleaning Plant Ltd. was formed in 1952 by producers from the Vegreville area. The original plant eventually gave way to a much larger facility in 1982, designed to accommodate the changing scale of agriculture in the northeastern Alberta.
That foresight matters today. The facility can accommodate Super B trains and other large trucks and has additional outdoor and overhead storage for incoming grain, cleaned grain and screenings.
The physical changes tell part of the story. The size of the average farm tells the rest.
