For the 50th episode of their Pasture to Profit podcast, Travis Taylor and Scott Stinnett decided to do something different. Instead of getting into the nitty-gritty of calf weaning, cattle nutrition or devising drought strategies – a few of the many topics they’ve explored in more than two years – the two livestock experts with Colorado State University Extension took a step back and focused, instead, on each other.
“One of the things we got to talking about, Travis, is we’ve really neglected to introduce ourselves,” Stinnett said at the start of the episode, which posted last summer. “So, tell us about how you were raised and what your relationship is with the beef cattle industry.”
Taylor, CSU Extension’s livestock production specialist for Yuma County, explained that he grew up in the southeastern Colorado community of Karval, graduating high school with a class of six while learning to raise cattle, sheep, hogs and some dryland crops on his family’s arid farm and ranch. By contrast, Stinnett, a 4-H youth development and livestock specialist in Kit Carson County, Yuma’s neighbor to the south, grew up in the suburbs of Tulsa, Okla., where he got involved in FFA as a 15-year-old. He got his first show heifer during his senior year, an experience he said turned him into “literally a cow nerd.”
Both men have advanced degrees and have been high school agriculture teachers, and they have more than 20 years of experience between them working for CSU Extension in eastern Colorado.
