Drought and Feed Shortages Continue to Challenge Nebraska Cattle Herds

Pasture and feed shortages weigh on nebraska ranchers.

Drought remains a major concern across the state of Nebraska despite some improvement compared to earlier in the summer. About 83% of Nebraska is currently experiencing drought conditions, a much larger share than the previous year.

Nebraska ranchers are facing challenging herd management decisions as drought conditions, wildfire recovery efforts, and market uncertainty continue to impact livestock operations. Although cattle prices remain strong, limited forage and feed supplies are making herd expansion difficult.

These insights according to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC) and the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), which provide key drought and agricultural data for Nebraska.

Severe, extreme, and exceptional drought conditions have expanded significantly compared to last year. These prolonged dry conditions continue to reduce forage production and place additional pressure on grazing lands.

The drought has also slowed recovery for ranchers affected by wildfires. Research indicates that burned pastures require adequate rainfall to recover, and some areas may need a year or more before grazing can resume.

Pasture conditions reflect the ongoing impact of the drought. Nearly two-thirds of Nebraska pastures are currently rated poor or very poor, far above historical averages.

Hay production has also suffered due to widespread dryness. Lower hay and alfalfa yields, combined with reduced hay inventories, are limiting feed availability for livestock producers.

Strong cattle prices would normally encourage ranchers to retain heifers and expand breeding herds. However, drought-related shortages of pasture and feed are making expansion difficult despite favorable market conditions.

Many producers are instead reducing herd sizes because of limited forage resources. The decision is further influenced by the strong value of cattle currently being sold compared to uncertain future returns.

Nebraska’s beef cow inventory was already at a multi-decade low at the start of the year. Given ongoing feed and forage shortages, substantial herd growth appears unlikely in the near future.

Until drought conditions ease and pasture recovery improves, Nebraska ranchers are expected to remain cautious with herd expansion decisions while focusing on maintaining available resources.
