Feds Launch Consultations to Develop Sustainable Ag Strategy

The Canadian government has opened a consultation process to develop a Sustainable Agriculture Strategy (SAS), a Dec. 12 news release said. The strategy will serve as a guide to support the livelihoods of farmers while growing a sustainable sector.

“The Sustainable Agriculture Strategy will pave the way to help us sustain the livelihoods of farmers. Drawing from their expertise and best practices, we can ensure that the sector is more resilient in the face of climate change,” Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal minister of agriculture and agri-food, said in the release.

The release noted by identifying goals and a way forward, Canada’s agriculture sector will be equipped to recover quickly from extreme events, thrive in a changing climate, contribute to world food security, while also contributing to Canada’s overall efforts to cut emissions. The government wants to amplify the work already underway and increase adoption of these best practices.

The strategy will be developed in close collaboration with the agricultural sector including the provinces and territories, the release said. The process will include public consultations, targeted workshops and an advisory committee. The committee will be co-chaired by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, it’ll be comprised of industry experts, including producers and representatives of associations and non-governmental organizations

Video: Spider Mite Control with Predatory Mites (Phytoseiulus persimilis)

The predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis is a highly effective biological control agent for spider mite infestations. As the first company to introduce this natural enemy, Koppert has been a pioneer in sustainable crop protection.

How does Phytoseiulus work?

•Adult mites feed on all life stages of spider mites.

•Nymphs consume spider mite eggs, larvae, and protonymphs.

•Although blind, Phytoseiulus detects spider mites by sensing webbing and leaf damage.

•It eliminates its prey by sucking out the contents, leaving only the empty skin behind.

Why use Phytoseiulus for spider mite control?

•High predation rate ensures rapid spider mite suppression.

•Fast life cycle leads to effective population growth.

•100% natural solution for sustainable pest control.
