Wheat and barley prices looked quite good in late August as Prairie farmers looked to kick harvest into high gear, said Darcy Haley, vice-president of Ag Value Brokers in Lethbridge.
“The market is moving higher at harvest time, which is fairly rare,” Haley said.
Haley added that they did about 8,000 tonnes in sales on Aug. 26, as U.S. wheat futures skyrocketed.
Reuters recently cited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who suggested Russian President Vladimir Putin is looking to draft another 300,000 troops to the war in Ukraine. There have also been widespread media reports of a possible Russian escalation of the conflict.
That saw Chicago soft wheat surge to its 45-cent per bushel limit, with Kansas City hard red and Minneapolis spring wheat jumping by 30 to 40 cents/bu.
