Five Key Swine Welfare Themes Identified as Canada’s Pig Code Update Moves Forward

Work is underway on the next update to Canada’s Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Pigs, and early stakeholder input is helping shape the direction of that process.

The update officially launched in mid-May with the release of a “top-of-mind” survey led by the National Farm Animal Care Council. The survey was designed to gather open-ended feedback on what stakeholders believe are the most important pig welfare issues to address as the Code is revised.

One Question, Clear Themes

Participants were asked a single, simple question: When you think about pig welfare, what comes to mind?

According to Jackie Wepruk, Division Director with the National Farm Animal Care Council, responses consistently pointed to five main welfare themes—none of which were surprising to those involved in the process:
