Oat, Barley Production Up from September

Canada’s feed grain sector is showing markedly stronger 2025 harvest results than previously forecast.

Statistics Canada’s survey-based crop production report on Thursday estimated this year’s national barley crop at 9.725 million tonnes, way up from the federal agency’s September model-based projection of 8.228 million and 19.4% above a year earlier. If accurate, it woul be the largest barley crop since 2022 at 9.986 million tonnes.

Meanwhile, estimated oat production has risen to 3.919 million tonnes, versus StatsCan’s September estimate of 3.369 million and well ahead of last year’s 3.357 million. It would also be the largest crop since 2022, when farmers harvested 5.226 million tonnes of oats

The estimated average barley yield has climbed to a record 79.4 bu/acre, far stronger than the 68.5 bu/acre forecast in September and above last year’s 63.2 bu/acre. That 25.6% gain in yield more than offset a 4.9% year-over-year decline in harvested area to 5.6 million acres.

Fo oats, the average estimated yield rose to 98.1 bu/acre, also a new high, surpassing September’s estimate of 90.1 bu/acre and up from last year’s 88.7 bu/acre.
