Ontario’s hog market continued to lose ground through August while corn and soybean costs moved sharply higher, creating a more challenging margin picture for producers heading into September.
The latest Weekly Hog Market Facts, compiled by OMAFA Swine Specialist Maggie Henry for the week ending August 28, shows Ontario’s 100% Base Formula Price at $231.24/ckg, down from $235.24 the previous week and $250.56 at the end of July. A year ago, the comparable formula price stood at $266.34/ckg.
That means the Ontario base formula price declined by more than $19/ckg over the five reporting dates included in the August market summary.
Pig values followed the same direction. The calculated weaned pig value fell from $65.15 per pig on July 31 to $60.12 on August 28, while feeder pig value declined from $103.36 to $95.39.
