Origin Of Alberta BSE Case Discovered; South Korea Bans Canada Beef

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) says the CFIA's investigation into the BSE case in Alberta has found the birth farm to also be in Alberta.

CCA spokesman John Masswohl says the reason it’s important to know when and where it was born is because presumably other cattle born on the same farm around the same time could have been exposed to the same feed.

"They'll trace those forward," he said. "They'll want to know, of those animals, how many are still alive and if they find any that are still alive, they will euthanize those typically and they'll test them for BSE as well."

Masswohl said the CFIA has been getting good co-operation from producers, adding that there were good feed and management records in place.

Also, the CCA is optimistic South Korea's suspension of Canada beef will be short lived.

South Korea imposed the suspension after learning about the latest case of BSE discovered in Alberta.
