PGDC Evaluating Potential New Crop Cultivars

The Prairie Grain Development Committee is holding its Annual Meetings online this year.

This week's forum focuses on the testing, evaluation, and recommending of potential new crop cultivars.

Dr Richard Cuthbert, a wheat breeder from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Swift Current Research and Development Centre has put forward two new CPS lines this year, HY2095 and HY2096.

"HY2095 has quite high grain yield, it's roughly 9% higher yielding than AC Penhold, its Midge tolerant and has very good stripe rust resistance. HY2096 is very strong straw, 6% higher yielding than Penhold and Midge tolerant again. So, they're more suited to probably the Alberta region. HY2096 also has quite a bit better FHB resistance."

HY2095, CPS_red

• Yield +9% over AAC Penhold; 29% over Carberry
• Sm1+ OWBM tolerant
• Maturity similar to AAC Penhold
• Height +9 cm AAC Penhold; lodging similar to AAC Foray
• FHB similar to AAC Penhold
• Stripe Rust / Stem Rust / Leaf Rust = R
• Common Bunt = Intermediate
• Quality testing has indicated eligibility for CPS_red market class

HY2096, CPS_red

• Yield +6% over AAC Penhold; 23% over Carberry
• Sm1+ OWBM tolerant
• Maturity similar to AAC Foray
• Height +12 cm AAC Penhold with very strong straw
• FHB better than AAC Penhold
• Stripe Rust / Stem Rust / Leaf Rust / Common Bunt = R
• Intermediate resistance to Ug99 stem rust variants
• Improved Falling Number
• Quality testing has indicated eligibility for CPS_red market class

Cuthbert notes along with the two CPS lines there are also two lines up for registration from Swift Current's Durum Breeding Program with  Dr Ruan.

DT2005, CWAD (Y. Ruan, Swift Current)

- Yields 2.8% more than Brigade (the highest yielding check) with similar grain protein
- Plant height equal to AAC Cabri; Lodging resistance similar to Brigade
- Maturity similar to Strongfield
- High test weight better than checks and kernel size larger than AAC Cabri
- Leaf Rust / Stem Rust / Stripe Rust / Common Bunt = R
- Moderate resistance to Ug99 stem rust variants
- FHB reaction equal to Brigade (MS*)

DT2009, CWAD (Y. Ruan, Swift Current)

- Yields similar to Brigade (the highest yielding check)
- Grain protein similar to Strongfield
- Plant height and maturity similar to AAC Cabri; lodging resistance equal to Brigade
- Test weight similar to AAC Cabri with larger kernel size
- Leaf Rust / Stem Rust / Stripe Rust = R
- Common Bunt = MR
- Moderate resistance to Ug99 stem rust variants
- Low FHB symptoms (MR-I) and lower DON accumulation (MR-MS)

Video: Will the 2025 USDA December Crop Report Be a Market Mover/Surprise?

Historically, the USDA December crop report is a non-event or another dud report as the USDA reserves any final supply changes to the final report in January of the following year in this case 2026. But after the longest U.S. government shutdown in history at 43 days and no October crop report will they provide more data/surprise and make an exception?

The final Stats Canada production report was bearish canola and wheat projection a record crop in both (it adds to the global glut of supplies) and bullish local corn and soybean prices in Ontario/Quebec thanks to a drought. It will not help the fund flow short-term, the USDA may need to offset it?

Lower weights, seasonal demand and higher U.S. beef select/choice values with a continued closure of the Mexican border to cattle will result in a resumption of higher cattle futures into yearend.
