Producer Profile: Van Roessel Pork Ltd. – A Topigs Norsvin Success Story

Van Roessel Pork Ltd., a standout operation in Ontario, is a shining example of innovation and excellence in modern pork production. Founded in 2015 by Scott and Teresa Van Roessel, the farm began as a 900-sow farrow-to-wean operation in Mitchell, Ontario, with two barns. By 2022, the Van Roessels had expanded and relocated to a state-of-the-art 3,200-sow farrow-to-wean barn near Cromarty, Ontario.

The Vision Behind Expansion
Scott Van Roessel explained the motivation for their expansion:
“Disease pressure, efficiency, and the benefits of loose housing all played a key role in our decision to build new and expand in that area.”

The new facility reflects this vision with its innovative design. Built in an H configuration, the barn has distinct areas for dry sow/gestation and farrowing rooms, along with tunnel ventilation to maintain optimal airflow during warmer months. Large farrowing crates (6’ x 9’) and EFS technology ensure compliance with regulations and promote animal welfare.

Dedication to Genetics and Performance
Van Roessel Pork Ltd. relies on Topigs Norsvin TN70 gilts, selected for their proven performance. The herd boasts a 92.4% farrowing rate, with 13.7 piglets weaned per litter and 34 pigs weaned per mated female per year.

Scott sources replacement gilts from Mae-Mart Farms’ Cedarlane barn, citing their consistent success in farrowing rooms. These results highlight the farm’s dedication to genetic excellence and efficient management practices.

Building Success with People
The operation thrives with a team of nine employees, led by Barn Manager Justin. Scott emphasized the importance of skilled and dedicated staff:
“The staff. Talented, hardworking, and dedicated people are essential to success.”

Family involvement also plays a role in the operation, with Scott and Teresa’s 10-year-old son, Austin, often helping on weaning days.

Future Plans and Family Life
Looking ahead, Scott expressed a desire to expand but is content with the farm’s current scale. Outside of work, the Van Roessel family enjoys fishing, ATVing, and playing hockey together.

A Commitment to Excellence
Topigs Norsvin Canada commends Van Roessel Pork Ltd. for its outstanding achievements and dedication to sustainable, efficient, and high-quality pork production. Their success underscores the importance of innovation, teamwork, and the right genetics in modern farming.

We wish the Van Roessel family continued success and look forward to supporting their operation in the years to come.

Alltech has introduced Olerix, an innovative phytogenic blend created to promote growth and feed efficiency in pigs. Through a proprietary coating process, the bioactive blend of phytogenic compounds used in Olerix is designed to outlast the manufacturing process, ensuring consistent outcomes from feed to finish. The result is a high-impact efficiency solution that provides consistent support for gut health, feed efficiency, immune function and growth performance. Olerix is backed by validated trials conducted under modern pork production conditions.

“As the industry searches for technology to drive profitability forward in a more sustainable manner, we’re thrilled to join that effort with our Olerix technology,” said Mark Hulsebus, general manager for U.S. pork at Alltech. “Our work in this phytogenic space is yielding very encouraging results, and we’re excited to make this new opportunity available to pork producers focused on optimizing feed efficiency and growth rates.”

“Olerix represents the next generation of phytogenic technology — combining feed efficiency, livability and immune support into a practical commercial solution producers can implement today,” said Andy Rash, U.S. monogastric director at Alltech.
