Rain Interrupts Saskatchewan Harvest but Improves Topsoil Moisture Conditions

Saskatchewan Agriculture reports significant precipitation last week impacted harvest progress but improved topsoil moisture conditions across the province.
Saskatchewan Agriculture released its crop report yesterday for the period from August 25th to August 31st.Davidson Ugheoke, a Crops Extension Specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, says producers throughout the province continue to report considerable variability.

Quote-Davidson Ugheoke-Saskatchewan Agriculture:

Last week started predominantly with dry conditions across much of Saskatchewan. This allowed producers to go a little bit far in harvest, not too far, although the reporting period ended up with localized areas receiving some rain and hail, which affected the harvest activities. Right now, we are at 18 percent harvest complete in Saskatchewan, which is up about seven percent from last week.

It's a good step in the right direction however, this is significantly below the five and ten-year averages of 39 percent and 34 percent respectively.Having said that, producers remain optimistic that favorable weather conditions will support further harvest progress. Right now, most of the crops coming off now are basically winter cereals and the pulses that were seeded early and every other earlier seeded crop.

From the forecast, it looks like it's going to be relatively dry and windy so harvest progress will definitely go up.How fast that will go up will be determined by how much sunshine we have because growers still have to scout and see field conditions before they put the equipment out in the field.
But I'm pretty sure in the coming weeks we will have higher numbers.

Ugheoke encourages growers to keep safety in mind and ensure fire suppression equipment is available while taking precautions around power lines and he reminds motorists to be aware of farm equipment on the roads. For more visit Farmscape.Ca.
