RM of P.A. declares an agricultural disaster

The Rural Municipality (RM) of Prince Albert is joining the growing list of areas in Saskatchewan that are struggling with drought-like conditions.

Earlier this week, the region’s council declared an agricultural disaster.

“We had to issue one across the entire RM in order to issue the emergency but it’s for specific areas in the RM, primarily in the southern portion,” said Eric Schmalz, the Reeve of the RM of Prince Albert.

Along with poor precipitation, farmers have also been losing crops to grasshoppers. According to Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Agriculture, the insect population has been so high because of the warm, dry weather conditions from this year and last year.
