Saskatchewan Pork Producer Calls on Ottawa to Prioritise Resolution of Canada U.S. Trade Issue

With Canadian Counter tariffs on U.S. Imports set to take effect Tuesday, a partner with Polar Pork is calling of Ottawa to prioritize striking a new trade agreement with the Americans. In response to a 50 percent U.S. tariff on certain Canadian imports, implemented following the break down in free trade talks, Canada will start to impose dollar for dollar retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports starting September 8th.

Florian Possberg, a partner with Polar Pork, says he's old enough to recall the first free trade agreement where Prime Minister Brian Mulrooney and President Ronald Regan broke new ground, creating a unique trade association involving Canada, the United States and Mexico.

There was give and take and they came up with a proposal that ended up being very good for all three countries and it was in an atmosphere of friendship. There were times when Mulroney and Reagan would break into Irish song and it was obvious that they really had a likeness for each other and they worked through problems and made things happen.

It seems today, though, that it started with our previous Prime Minister Justin Trudeau going behind the back of the President of the United States saying rather derogatory things about him and it really got that relationship off to a really rocky and distrustful atmosphere. Now our current Prime Minister Carney is cozying up to America's number one enemy, which is China and further creating distrust.You can go in public and say nice things about the President, but if you're going behind their back and doing things that are poking them in the eye, that's not the way to work out sensitive issues in an atmosphere of goodwill.

Possberg notes we could have a deal or the situation could escalate on a moment's notice. He acknowledges, he doesn't foresee a return to the good old days when the Prime Minister and President sang silly Irish songs but he still believes the American President and the Canadian Prime Minister have the best interests of their citizens in mind and he’s hopeful cooler heads will prevail.For more visit Farmscape.Ca.
