EMILI’s work in digital agriculture has taught us the value of sustainable food systems, so when the team was looking for a community-focused team building activity, Harvest Manitoba was our first choice.
The chance to volunteer together was not only a lot of fun, it was an opportunity to witness firsthand how dedicated Harvest Manitoba is in ensuring food security for all.
Feeding over 108,000 Manitobans per month, it is one of the largest food distributors of its kind in Canada. Theirs is vital work that ensures families, children, infants, and seniors have food on their table.
At a recent MBiz Breakfast, a group from EMILI had the chance to hear Harvest Manitoba President & CEO Vince Barletta talk about the importance of coming together as a community to ensure all Manitobans have access to food. There was a point in the presentation where he asked attendees to stand if they had volunteered or donated to Harvest Manitoba, and everyone in the room stood up.
“It takes a province to feed a province,” he said as he shared Harvest Manitoba’s plans to build a 100,000 square foot Manitoba Food Transformation Centre.
Once built, the facility will double Harvest Manitoba’s food handling capacity, including a commercial kitchen that will enable production of 520,000 meals a year and expanded cold storage and flash freezing technology to allow them to preserve fresh produce.
