Staying together for the monarch about a farmer living with milkweed

When Ray Ford bought a neighbouring 90-acre parcel, milkweed was an unexpected part of the package. He’s still learning to live with the on-farm “butterfly preserve.”  

In the early summer 2023 issue of Small Farm Canada magazine, Ray Ford describes his on-farm butterfly conservation journey while balancing raising beef and crops. 

It started small – a few patches of milkweed scattered in 90 acres of hayfield and pasture. No big deal, I thought. The weed and I can get along.
