Tobacco, Beef and More Field Day Scheduled for June 26

The University of Tennessee Highland Rim AgResearch and Education Center will host the annual Tobacco, Beef and More Field Day on Thursday, June 26. The event features a trade show as well as opportunities for tobacco farmers, row crop farmers, beef producers and home gardeners to learn about the latest research-based production recommendations.

Attendees will be able to choose from four tours during the event, each with a certain theme. Field tours include the tobacco tour, field crops tour, beef and forage tour, and a home and garden tour. Lunch will follow the conclusion of the tours at 12:00. There will be a presentation from 8:15 – 9:15 in the registration area by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture on pesticide record keeping, ESA and Herbicide Movement. This presentation will provide attendees with 1 private applicator CEU and 1 commercial CEU. The trade show is open all morning for anyone interested in learning about general production and livestock agriculture.

I share a cattle herd update after feeding hay during the worst of a winter snowstorm. With the weather improving, we’re able to move the cows back onto grass and continue grazing.

I also briefly talk about a mistake I made when planning our grazing rotation and what I learned from it. Adjusting plans and learning as we go is part of managing cattle in a low-stress, practical system.
